The Commercial Vehicle Operations program prepares individuals for employment as professional tractor-trailer drivers. The program content includes instruction in operating diesel powered tractor trailer rigs, identifying common vehicle components, defensive driving skills, actual driving on rural, urban and interstate highways, handling cargo, backing and maneuvering tractor trailers, documentation and verification of loads, logging and the performance of vehicle inspections.

The Commercial Vehicle Operations program is a 6 week course held Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  The program goal is to obtain a Class A driver's license (combination Tractor / Trailer).  Students can also obtain assistance with other endorsements including Doubles/Triples, HazMat, and Tanker.  Students can take their CDL examination at the Lafourche Campus as the program instructor is a Louisiana Certified CDL Third Party Examiner.

Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers transport goods from one location to another. Most tractor-trailer drivers are long-haul drivers and operate trucks with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds per gross vehicle weight (GVW). They deliver goods over intercity routes, sometimes spanning several states.

Employment of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is projected to grow 21 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average of all occupations.  As the economy grows, the demand for goods will increase, and more truck drivers will be needed to keep supply chains moving. Trucks transport most of the freight in the United States, so as households and businesses increase their spending, the trucking industry will grow.

In 2011, the average annual income in Louisiana for a Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver was $38,340 or $18.43 per hour.* For more information about jobs related to this program, please visit
