South Central Louisiana Technical College

The Welding program prepares individuals for employment in the field of welding. Instruction is provided in various processes and techniques of welding including oxyfuel cutting, carbon arc cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding, pipe-welding, plasma arc cutting, blueprint reading, weld symbols, and joints.

Students entering the Welding Program have the option of completing a Technical Diploma in Welding or one or more of a variety of Certificate of Technical Studies or Technical Competency exit points. A full time student may complete one or all the degree/certificate programs in about one calendar year. Click here to open the complete Welding Curriculum.

After completion of this program, the student will have covered the skills designated by the AWS (American Welding Society) and will be prepared to take the AWS Level 1 certification test.  The AWS determines industry standards for welding and is recognized worldwide.

Welders work in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work that welders do and the equipment they use vary, depending on the industry. The most common and simplest type of welding today, arc welding, uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals together-but there are more than 100 different processes that a welder can use. The type of weld is normally determined by the types of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding is to take place.

In 2011, the average annual income in Louisiana for a Welder was $42,020 or $20.20 per hour.* For more information about jobs related to this program, please visit
